Description

This French Hot Chocolate (Chocolat Chaud) is rich, velvety, and intensely chocolatey—made with real dark chocolate and a touch of cream for a café-style drink at home.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 1/4 cups whole milk
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • 4 oz (115 g) dark chocolate, chopped (60–70% cocoa preferred)
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp instant coffee or espresso powder (optional)
  • Sugar, to taste (optional)
  • Pinch of sea salt (optional)

Instructions

  1. Add milk and cream to a medium saucepan over low to medium heat. Warm until steaming—do not boil.
  2. Add chopped chocolate and whisk continuously until fully melted, smooth, and glossy.
  3. Stir in vanilla and espresso powder (if using). Taste and add sugar if desired.
  4. Pour into 2 small mugs. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • This is intentionally rich—smaller cups are ideal.
