Description

Molasses Brown Soda Bread is a hearty and rustic Irish classic. This bread uses wholesome flours and molasses for a unique flavor. It’s quick to make, requires no yeast, and results in a crunchy crust and moist interior. It pairs perfectly with soups, stews, or breakfast spreads.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar (optional)
  • 1 1/2 cups buttermilk
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 1 tbsp melted butter (for brushing on top)
  • 1/2 cup oats (for topping or mixing in)
  • 1/4 cup chopped nuts or seeds
  • 1 tsp caraway seeds

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease a cast iron skillet.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the whole wheat flour, all-purpose flour, baking soda, salt, and brown sugar.
  3. In another bowl, whisk the buttermilk and molasses until smooth.
  4. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until a rough dough forms. Do not overmix.
  5. Shape the dough into a round loaf and place it on your prepared baking sheet or skillet. Score a deep ‘X’ on top with a sharp knife.
  6. Bake for 35-45 minutes, or until the loaf sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom and is golden brown.
  7. Brush the top with melted butter while the Molasses Brown Soda Bread is still warm.
  8. Let the bread cool for at least 15 minutes before slicing.

Notes

  • Do not overmix the dough, as this can make the bread dense.
  • Preheating the oven ensures a strong initial rise for your Molasses Brown Soda Bread.
  • Score the top deeply to help the bread bake evenly.
  • Store leftover Molasses Brown Soda Bread in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days, or freeze for up to 2 months.
  • This Molasses Brown Soda Bread is best served warm or toasted with butter, cheese, or honey.
